Grade 1 includes lessons on: listening to, describing, identifying and reproducing sounds in the environment; beat and rhythm in daily life; moving to beat and rhythm; identifying and reproducing beat and rhythm; pitch identity (high and low pitched sounds), and identifying and reproducing various dynamics and tempi.
Students perform rhythms using body percussion. They also create and perform sounds to enhance a story. Singing nursery rhymes, changing lyrics to and performing a familiar song, are used to assist with the identification of tempo, pitch and rhythm.
Students learn the theme song, "World of Shapes", by singing along. Four forms of accompaniment are provided on audio tracks (full instrumental and vocal, vocal with verses but without chorus, vocal with chorus but without verses, and instrumental only). Follow-up lessons ask the students to apply their knowledge of shape to sounds and rhythms in language. Elements of music such as beat, and pitch are also emphasized. The book culminates with a performance of the theme.
